April Exhibition in the Stables Gallery by artist Jean Drew (Jean Balfour)
Jean Balfour CBE was born in 1927 and has lived in Fife since her marriage to John Balfour of Balbirnie in 1950. Most of her childhood was spent in Highland Perthshire. She graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1949 with an Honours degree in Biological Sciences. She and her husband were both involved with the management of Balbirnie Estate. As a Chartered Forester, she always had a special interest in forestry.
She was involved in many rural charities and was a founder council member of the Scottish Wildlife Trust. She was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and had been awarded Honorary Doctorates by the Universities of St Andrews and Stirling.
Jean Balfour had an interest in and love for the countryside all her life. She always enjoyed painting in watercolour in particular. For many years she had gone to Iceland and Greenland to explore arctic vegetation and to paint the landscapes. However most of the paintings in this exhibition are local subjects in Fife and elsewhere in Scotland.
Jean Balfour died peacefully on 6th February 2023.
