Originally commissioned by Imaginate in 2020 for its Edinburgh International Children’s Festival, Barrowland Ballet is delighted to announce that Too Close to the Sun will tour from Friday 12 May until Saturday 3 June.

Too Close to the Sun will open at Platform (Glasgow) before touring to the Beacon Arts Centre (Greenock) and Macrobert Arts Centre (Stirling), culminating at the 2023 Edinburgh International Children’s Festival from Wednesday 31 May until Saturday 3 June.

Inspired by the Greek legend of Icarus, this is a story of a girl weighed down by the responsibility of the environmental crisis. She dreams of the boy Icarus and begins to work out her escape. This is the story of a girl who’s learning to fly. At one with the wind, this is what it is to be free. To soar. She soars up … up … and away … and the world below becomes smaller and smaller.

Too Close To The Sun is about the power of imagination and the sheer determination that lets you fly when forces all around want to pull you down.

For children aged between 7 and 13 years of age, the award-winning Barrowland Ballet use intricate choreography, spoken word and humour to tell this evocative story.

The creative team brings together once again choreographer Natasha Gilmore, playwright Robert Alan Evans, composer Davey Anderson and designer Fred Pommerehn. The dancers are Molly Danter, Ilona Gumowska and Charlotte Mclean.

Natasha Gilmore, co-creator, director and choreographer said: “I’ve become aware that children are increasingly weighed down by a sense of responsibility for the environmental crisis they’ve inherited. Too Close To The Sun is the story of one girl learning how to navigate these complex issues. It’s been brilliant to collaborate with Rob again after working together on Tiger and Tiger Tale nearly 10 years ago (both of which continue to tour around the world). Working alongside this brilliant creative team to create a dynamic, funny and compelling new production, I hope young audiences will enjoy the performance, and be inspired and intrigued by the ancient story of Icarus and the power of the imagination.”

Robert Alan-Evans, co-creator added: "I've always wanted to make a show based around the Icarus story. And with Natasha, I feel like we've made it from a child's point of view. When you're young there's so much you want to escape from and yet you have so little power to do it. The girl in our story not only dreams of escape, but she takes concrete steps to make it happen; she designs her own wings, studies the birds and finally discovers the story of a boy who had done it long, long before; the boy Icarus who had to fly if he was to escape the labyrinth his dad had designed to contain a terrifying Minotaur."

Noel Jordan, Festival Director said: “With anxiety about the climate being a key concern for 84% of children around the world this feels like a very timely production. Barrowland Ballet are known for their dynamic work for young audiences and Imaginate are thrilled to finally have the opportunity to present their new work, commissioned in 2020 and delayed by the global pandemic, to audiences at the Edinburgh International Children’s Festival and across Scotland. The production promises to breath new life into an old myth from the perspective of a female protagonist. I for one, can’t wait.”
