The Crusoe in Lower Largo, Fife has launched a Scottish malt whisky and gin bar, The Juan Fernandez. It offers some of the best views in the region with stunning views to the east along the Fife coast towards Elie and south across the Firth of Forth to East Lothian.
The intimate bar that can only seat up to 12 people has an extensive selection of malt whiskies from all five Scottish whisky regions. Guests can explore Scottish favourites, including a full range from nearby Kingsbarns distillery. Behind the bar, there are also rare finds such as a 21-year-old Dalmore and a 23 year old Glenfiddich. In addition to its impressive whisky collection, it has sourced an array of Scottish gins from every corner of the nation ranging from Shetland to Galloway and Barra to Montrose. The bar will also feature regularly changing whisky and gin flights, to allow customers to try a range of styles and flavours.
The name Juan Fernandez pays homage to the Juan Fernadez archipelago, where Alexander Selkirk, a resident of Lower Largo, was marooned in the early 18th century. Selkirk’s experience on this remote island located 400 miles off the coast of Peru is believed to have inspired Daniel Defoe’s literary classic, ‘The Life and strange surprising adventures of Robinson Crusoe’ published in 1719.
The Juan Fernandez bar celebrates Lower Largo’s literary legacy - The Crusoe Hotel is renowned for a footprint in the bar, which legend says belonged to Alexander Selkirk. The new bar complements the hotel's strong food and beverage offering that also includes the Selkirk private dining area that can seat up to 24 people. The first-floor restaurant offers panoramic sea views, perfect for any meal, while the ground-floor Seaside Bar provides a relaxed, dog-friendly option with locally sourced, seasonal Scottish cuisine.
Since opening, The Crusoe has won numerous awards, in 2023 it was won AA Guest Accommodation of the Year for Scotland at the AA B&B Awards and crowned Romantic Hotel of the Year at The Scottish National Hotels of the Year Awards. This year it was named by The Times as one of the five best hotels in Scotland.
