We decided to start up the gallery store in response to fast art and the homogenisation of retail, to show amazing and diverse work and give a place where anyone can come and find something ahead of the trends to beautify their surroundings.
We wanted to bridge the gap between white walled galleries and friendly retail shops, firmly believing that access to independent artists and creative pieces for your home shouldn't be elitist or restrictive. Everyone should be able to consider their surroundings and have fun with their living spaces.
Ormus is curated by the artist Patrick R Allan who uses his creative eye to find artists who truly mean what they do.
"There's an indescribable quality to a piece of work that you know has been done with joy and passion, I don't usually know what I'm looking for, but I know when I've found it. It's an immediate spark when I see something that fits my criteria for selection, a feeling I only get from seeing people be creative. My favourite shops were always the gift shops in big museum galleries like the Met in NY and the Burrell in Glasgow, but I could never find something like that for smaller or up and coming creatives.
As an illustrator myself it was always difficult to find somewhere to show and sell my work, it never really seemed like it fit in properly in the gallery scene and there weren't many shops that sold the sort of art that I liked, that you could tell was made by an artist expressing themselves."
Patrick curates art from across the globe having artists from New Zealand, England and Canada but also loves to showcase the near-by talent, always having art from Fife locals, showing the diverse and rich creative culture that Fife has to offer the world.
We love to keep things fresh and interesting so we're always getting new pieces in. Most of the work we have is completely unique and one off, so we always have a rolling influx of amazing new pieces from our artists, there's always something new to see! We also have loads of events from workshops to pop-up exhibitions alongside our major exhibition every 6 months where we showcase all the new artists for that season as well as new collections from our favourites.
Aberdour is a beautiful wee place on the Fife coastal path and Ormus is located right on the high street in an old butcher's shop, complete with all the original meat hooks, beautiful old tiles, and an amazing spiral staircase. Inside you can expect to find a relaxed, dog friendly and welcoming place full of exciting new arts from across the creative spectrum, ceramics, jewellery, fabrics, lighting, paintings and prints alongside greetings cards, books, homewares, pins, candles and more.
Open Thursday - Sunday, 10am -4pm
